Money, money, money
Must be funny
In the rich man's world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich man's world
Aha-ahaaa
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
It's a rich man's world
- Abba lyrics
Let's face it, without some form of currency, you are lost. But it's not always about the cash or cards in your possession. It's also about being able to get help when you have nothing at all.
Nobody wants to hand over a gold ring, a valuable watch, etc., to get help from someone who expects to be paid for any services they render to you. You need, somehow, to find some hard currency.
So I'm doubting human nature and the willingness to help your fellow man (or woman)? Like the well-trained boy scout, be prepared for anything. After all, procrastination is the sworn enemy of preparation.
A great deal will depend on where you are, your circumstances, and your own ability to get out of a difficult situation. While many people will opt for one of those shrink-wrapped, controlling and nursemaid types of package holiday, not everyone wants to be a slave to an itinerary set by other people.
Be it Benidorm, Barbados or a Brazilian rainforest, preparedness is always advisable. Different situations require different preparations.
But for now, we shall focus upon issues involving money. Anything else will be covered on our Travel page. Our topics:
All of the above links should help out the vast majority of people in need of assistance. Having said this, we cannot offer anything else at this time except our best wishes and prayers that you have a trouble-free holiday. And should a situation arise where none of the above will help, there's always your Embassy / Consulate contact. Guidance can be found on our Emergencies page.
All bank cards should have emergency numbers printed on them. Fat use though if you haven't got a copy of this number beacuse you have lost your bank card - either through negligence or theft.
Below we are listing official links to all the popular banks and building societies. From these links you can find the number to call to contact your bank's overseas help service. But a few simple tips to help you out. Read these BEFORE you even set foot outside the country.
Firstly, NEVER rely upon one bank card while travelling. If you have a partner, then likely you will each have a card. Being able to transfer funds (via internet banking) from one account to another should help you. But if you travel alone, then try to keep your cards separate. If one is kept in a wallet that is lost or stolen, then you will have the fall-back of a second card. Perhaps you can leave a back-up card in a secure location?
Secondly, keep the bank's overseas emergency number written down somewhere. Again, not your wallet. If it (the wallet) is lost or stolen, then it's of no use to you - is it?
Thirdly, and as with other important materials (such as passports), why not scan all your vital documents, bank cards, etc., and copy then to an encrypted memory stick? Having access to all your information as a back-up can be a life-saver.
Fourthly, when ever you pay for something, always try to keep your bank card in view. This is especially important if you visit an establishment that you feel you cannot trust with any degree of confidence.
